After some deliberation, I have decided to rescind the shareware fee for MacCompress.  If you have an earlier version, discard it.   This version of MacCompress is free, but NOT in the public domain.  MacCompress may be freely copied and distributed, provided that it is not changed in any manner and provided no fee of any kind is charged for it.
